About Us

Photo of shop front

Our sweet shop, Caramella, was established in 1987.  It is situated in the vibrant area of Brighton called the North Laine, which is known as the city's bohemian quarter and is full of small individual shops, cafes and antique markets (it is not part of The Lanes, which lie to the south).

You can find us in Kensington Gardens, a pedestrianised street whose interesting shops are typical of the North Laine.  Kensington Gardens is well worth a visit in its own right - there's a photo below.

We sell most of our sweets by weight as pick-and-mix, but also offer a number of prepacked products plus some that are sold individually (e.g. sugar mice).

Many of our sweets are old favourites that are no longer as widely available as they once were.  We pride ourselves on offering the original varieties of these from brands such as Barnett's, Haribo and Maynards (rather than cheaper copies that are often inferior).

Customers come back to us again and again because we take care to select top-quality varieties of all our sweets.  For example, we think our Dutch Liquorice and R & J's New Zealand Licorice are among the best examples of liquorice that you will find, while our Turkish Delight comes all the way from Istanbul.

The shop was featured in a series broadcast by Channel 4, on the history of sweets, called "Sweet Tooth".  It was also featured on Japanese television, and live on BBC breakfast television in December 2003, when the subject was "old fashioned sweets".

In recent years a few customers have contacted us to order sweets that they cannot obtain from their local shops.  We thought that others might also be looking for particular sweets that we can supply, so in 2005 we set up this website to invite you to buy our sweets.

We have a much wider range of sweets and chocolates (including diabetic chocolates and chocolate bars) than is featured on this website.  Personal shoppers and enquiries are welcome.
